Korea Institute for Advanced Study (KIAS)

KIAS was founded in October 1996 by the Ministry of Science and Technology of Korea with a strong commitment to the excellence in basic sciences. KIAS is an open institute of dynamic scientific interactions. Scientists from all over the world visit KIAS for collaborative research, sabbatical leave, and other research activities. KIAS also hosts numerous conferences, seminars, workshops, and seasonal schools. Given its global environment - faculty and research bodies composed of diverse nationality, competitive programs developed by the world's most recognized scholars and scientists, KIAS welcomes as much interactions as possible with academic communities and research organizations around the world. The Institute's fundamental role is to carry out pure basic research driven by curiosity. For this reason, it started operation with two most basic fields of science: mathematics and physics. In 2003, Computational Sciences was additionally introduced to expand the scientific horizon of the Institute while remaining true to its fundamental mission. KIAS attracts outstanding postdoctoral fellows as research members, and hosts over 1,500 leading scholars from home and abroad each year, including Nobel laureates and Fields medalists. As a flagship of the Korean fundamental sciences, KIAS continues its efforts to bring a brighter future for basic sciences.
